Hyundai follows industry-standard API and ILSAC specifications rather than proprietary codes. However, the correct viscosity grade is critical — especially for Smartstream engines with known oil consumption issues. This page covers what every Hyundai owner needs to know.
API SP / ILSAC GF-6 — The Modern Standard
All Hyundai engines from 2020 onwards require API SP or ILSAC GF-6A certified oil. This specification provides enhanced protection against Low-Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI), which is particularly important for Hyundai's turbocharged GDi engines. API SP also offers improved timing chain wear protection and better deposit control compared to the previous API SN standard.
0W-20 vs 5W-30 — Which Viscosity?
Most modern Hyundai petrol engines (Kappa, Smartstream) specify SAE 0W-20 for optimal fuel economy. However, some older models and diesel engines (CRDi) require SAE 5W-30. The Smartstream 2.5 turbo specifically requires 0W-20 or 0W-30 — never 5W-30, as the thicker oil doesn't flow correctly through the engine's tight tolerances at cold start.
Smartstream Engines — Oil Consumption Awareness
Hyundai's Smartstream 2.5-litre engines (both naturally aspirated and turbo) have documented oil consumption issues. Hyundai considers up to 1 quart per 1,000 miles 'acceptable', though many owners report higher consumption. The piston ring design allows some blow-by, and fuel dilution can occur during short trips. Check your oil level every 1,000 miles and use only the specified API SP oil to minimise consumption.
Hyundai's 5-Year Warranty — Oil Matters
Hyundai offers a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty in the UK. However, warranty claims can be declined if incorrect oil has been used or if service intervals have been missed. Always keep receipts showing the correct API SP or ILSAC GF-6 oil was used at every service.
