Audi shares the Volkswagen Group oil specification system (VW 504 00, 507 00, 508 00) but applies them within its own LongLife service regime. Choosing the correct specification is essential for maintaining Audi's extended service intervals and protecting advanced TFSI and TDI powertrains.
VW 504 00 / 507 00 — The Standard Audi LongLife Specs
VW 504 00 (petrol) and 507 00 (diesel with DPF) are the core specifications for most Audi engines built since 2005. These specs enable Audi's LongLife service intervals of up to 30,000 km or 2 years. They require SAE 5W-30 with low-SAPS chemistry to protect diesel particulate filters. Almost every A3, A4, A5, Q3, and Q5 requires one of these two specifications.
VW 508 00 / 509 00 — Next-Gen Low-Viscosity
VW 508 00 (petrol) and 509 00 (diesel) are the newer specifications introduced for Audi's latest EA888 Gen 4 and EA211 EVO engines. These require ultra-low viscosity SAE 0W-20 oil and are not backwards compatible — you cannot use 508 00 in an engine that specifies 504 00, and vice versa. Models like the A3 8Y with the 2.0 TFSI and Q5 with the latest 2.0 TDI use these specifications.
Audi LongLife Service System
Audi's service indicator calculates oil change intervals dynamically based on driving style, engine load, temperature, and fuel quality. Under favourable conditions, intervals can reach 30,000 km, but severe use (short trips, city driving, towing with quattro models) will shorten this significantly. Many independent specialists recommend a maximum of 15,000 km regardless of what the service indicator shows, especially for turbocharged TFSI engines prone to oil dilution.
Quattro AWD — No Different Oil, Same Spec
Audi's quattro all-wheel drive system does not change the engine oil requirement — the transfer case and rear differential use their own separate fluids. Whether your Audi is front-wheel drive or quattro, the engine oil specification remains the same. However, quattro models may experience slightly higher engine loads during spirited driving, making correct oil specification adherence even more important.
Castrol — Audi's Factory Fill Partner
Castrol EDGE is the factory-fill oil for Audi and supplies the official Castrol EDGE Professional LongLife III 5W-30 (504 00/507 00) and Castrol EDGE Professional LL IV FE 0W-20 (508 00/509 00). However, any oil carrying the correct VW specification number on the label is equally valid — the approval matters, not the brand.
