Rover ceased production in 2005, but hundreds of thousands of Rover 25, 45, 75, and earlier models remain on the road. Rover never established a proprietary oil specification — instead, they recommended oils meeting industry ACEA standards. For the K-Series engine, oil quality plays a role in managing the infamous head gasket failure (HGF) risk.
ACEA A3/B3 or A3/B4 — The Recommended Standard
Without a proprietary OEM specification, Rover engines should use oil meeting ACEA A3/B3 or A3/B4 — the mid-SAPS, high-performance European standard. SAE 5W-30 or 5W-40 are the most appropriate viscosities for K-Series and T-Series engines. These viscosity grades provide adequate protection across the UK temperature range while maintaining flow to hydraulic lifters. For older A-Series and O-Series engines in classic Rovers, 10W-40 or 15W-40 meeting ACEA A3/B3 is appropriate.
K-Series Engine — HGF and Oil Management
The Rover K-Series (1.1, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8) is notorious for head gasket failure caused by a combination of design factors — thin cylinder liners, plastic dowels, and a coolant system prone to airlocks. While oil choice alone cannot prevent HGF, maintaining clean oil with good anti-corrosion properties helps protect the head gasket mating surfaces and the coolant-to-oil barrier. Regular oil changes at 6,000-mile intervals are recommended — the K-Series is not tolerant of extended drain periods.
Rover 75 / MG ZT — KV6 and BMW Diesels
The Rover 75 used two distinct engine families. The 2.0 and 2.5 KV6 petrol engines require ACEA A3/B4 5W-30 or 5W-40 — these are smooth V6 units that benefit from quality synthetic oil. The 2.0 CDT and CDTi diesel engines (BMW M47) are actually BMW units and should ideally use oil meeting BMW LL-04 or at minimum ACEA C3 5W-30 to protect the diesel particulate filter where fitted.
Classic Rovers — Older Engine Requirements
Pre-1990 Rovers with A-Series (Mini-derived), O-Series, and Buick-derived V8 engines have less demanding oil requirements. A good quality 10W-40 or 15W-40 mineral or semi-synthetic meeting API SL or ACEA A3/B3 is perfectly adequate. The Rover V8 (3.5, 3.9, 4.0, 4.6) runs with generous clearances and is tolerant of various oil grades — 10W-40 is the most popular choice. These engines should not use modern ultra-low-SAPS oils (ACEA C3/C5) as they need the higher ZDDP anti-wear content found in A3/B4 formulations.
