Our Mission
Oil Select exists for one reason: to give car owners a clear, reliable answer to "what engine oil does my car need?"
We cover specific car models and engine variants — not generic brand pages. Every article targets one model with one engine, because a VW Polo 1.2 TSI and a Polo 1.0 MPI require completely different oil specifications. Getting it wrong can damage your engine, void your warranty, and cost thousands in repairs.
How We Research
Every specification published on Oil Select goes through a verification process:
- Manufacturer service manuals — We start with the official source. Oil capacity, viscosity, and OEM approval codes come directly from manufacturer technical documentation.
- OEM oil finder tools — Volkswagen, BMW, Ford, and other manufacturers provide online tools to look up approved oils by model and engine code. We cross-reference these.
- Technical databases — We verify data against established automotive databases including AUTODOC, AMSOIL lookup, and manufacturer specification sheets.
- Owner community validation — We review owner forums, Used Oil Analysis (UOA) reports, and real-world experiences to identify discrepancies between official specs and practical reality.
If sources conflict, we trust the hierarchy: manufacturer service manual > OEM oil finder > technical databases > forums.
What We Don't Do
- We don't guess. If we can't verify a specification, we don't publish it.
- We don't recommend oil filters. Filter part numbers are frequently wrong across the internet. We focus on what we can verify: oil specifications.
- We don't write generic brand pages. "Best oil for a VW Polo" is meaningless without specifying which engine. Every article covers one engine variant.
- We don't recommend oils that only "meet requirements." Every oil we suggest carries the formal OEM approval — not just a marketing claim on the bottle.
Oil Recommendations & Affiliate Links
Oil Select includes links to recommended products on Amazon. These are affiliate links — we may earn a small commission if you purchase through them. This never affects our recommendations: we only suggest oils that carry the correct OEM approval for your specific engine.
We recommend 3-4 oils per article from established brands (Castrol, Mobil 1, Shell, Liqui Moly, Total, and others) that hold the required specification. The "best" oil for your car is any oil that meets the OEM spec — brand preference is secondary.
