MG Engine Oil Specifications & Guides

2 models covered — find the right oil specification for your MG.

Modern MG vehicles are built by SAIC Motor and use Chinese-engineered engines with specifications aligned to ACEA European standards. MG does not have a proprietary OEM oil norm — instead, they specify ACEA ratings and viscosity grades, with most current models requiring ACEA C5 0W-20.

ACEA C5 0W-20 — Current MG Standard

Most current MG petrol models — including the MG ZS, MG HS, and MG 5 — require SAE 0W-20 meeting ACEA C5. This ultra-low viscosity with low-SAPS chemistry is designed for fuel efficiency while providing adequate protection for the SAIC 1.5T turbocharged four-cylinder engine. ACEA C5 is less widely available than C3, so check oil labels carefully — many common 0W-20 oils only carry API SP without the ACEA C5 rating.

SAIC Engines — Chinese Engineering

MG's current engine range is developed by SAIC in China. The 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder (code-named 15E4E) produces up to 162 hp and features direct injection, integrated exhaust manifold, and a twin-scroll turbo. These are modern designs built to international standards. The 1.0L three-cylinder turbo in some MG3 variants is also SAIC-designed. While these engines lack the decades-long track record of European powertrains, they are built to tight tolerances that require correct oil specification.

MG4 Electric & Hybrid Considerations

The MG4 EV is fully electric and does not require engine oil. However, the MG HS Plus EV (plug-in hybrid) combines the 1.5T petrol engine with an electric motor and still requires ACEA C5 0W-20 for the combustion engine. Hybrid operation with frequent electric-only driving means the engine oil sees more thermal cycling and potentially longer intervals between full warm-up — maintain time-based oil change intervals even if mileage is low.

7-Year Warranty — Oil Compliance Matters

MG offers an industry-leading 7-year / 80,000-mile warranty. To maintain warranty coverage, oil changes must be performed at the specified intervals using oil that meets MG's requirements. Using incorrect oil or exceeding service intervals gives MG grounds to reject warranty claims. Keep receipts showing the oil brand, specification, and viscosity used at each service — this documentation is essential if a warranty claim arises.
