Jeep Engine Oil Specifications & Guides

1 model covered — find the right oil specification for your Jeep.

Jeep uses the Stellantis Mopar MS-6395 oil specification across its range. From the Wrangler on desert trails to the Grand Cherokee on the highway, correct oil choice protects Pentastar V6 and HEMI V8 engines under the demanding conditions that Jeep owners regularly encounter.

Mopar MS-6395 — The Jeep Standard

Mopar MS-6395 is required for all modern Jeep petrol engines. It exceeds API SP with enhanced LSPI protection, turbo deposit resistance, and timing chain wear prevention. The Wrangler and Gladiator 3.6L Pentastar V6 require SAE 0W-20, the Grand Cherokee 5.7L HEMI uses SAE 5W-20, and the 2.0L Hurricane turbo four-cylinder in the Wrangler 4xe requires SAE 5W-30. Always verify the correct viscosity for your specific engine and model year.

Pentastar V6 — The Workhorse Engine

The 3.6L Pentastar V6 powers the majority of Jeeps — Wrangler, Gladiator, Grand Cherokee, and Cherokee. In Jeep applications, this engine often works harder than in other Stellantis vehicles due to off-road use, larger tyres, and heavier kerb weights. The engine requires SAE 0W-20 meeting MS-6395. Despite being naturally aspirated, the Pentastar benefits from quality synthetic oil that maintains viscosity under high-temperature, high-load conditions.

Off-Road Use — Extreme Oil Conditions

Jeeps — especially the Wrangler and Gladiator — regularly encounter conditions that no other mainstream vehicle faces: steep inclines causing oil starvation at extreme angles, water crossings that can introduce moisture, and prolonged low-speed crawling that generates extreme heat without adequate airflow. These conditions fall firmly into the severe service category. Jeep owners who go off-road regularly should change oil at 5,000-mile intervals or less, regardless of what the Oil Life Monitor indicates.

2.0L Hurricane Turbo — Wrangler 4xe

The Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid and Grand Cherokee 4xe use the 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder (GME-T4). This engine requires SAE 5W-30 meeting MS-6395 — a different viscosity from the Pentastar V6. The turbocharger is sensitive to oil quality, and hybrid operation means the engine may frequently start and stop, causing thermal cycling stress on the oil. Maintain strict oil change intervals and always use the correct specification.
