Kia shares its engine platform with Hyundai and follows the same API/ILSAC specification system. The correct oil protects your engine warranty (Kia offers an industry-leading 7-year warranty) and is especially important for Smartstream engines with known oil consumption concerns.
API SP / ILSAC GF-6 — Required for Modern Kia Engines
All Kia engines from 2020 onwards require API SP or ILSAC GF-6A certified oil. This provides superior LSPI (Low-Speed Pre-Ignition) protection for turbocharged GDi engines and improved chain wear protection. Older Kia models may accept API SN or SN Plus, but upgrading to API SP is always backward-compatible and recommended.
Viscosity Guide by Engine Type
Kappa 1.0 and 1.2 MPI (naturally aspirated): SAE 5W-30 or 5W-20. Kappa 1.0 T-GDi (turbo): SAE 5W-30. Smartstream 2.0 MPI: SAE 0W-20. Smartstream 2.5 GDi and 2.5 Turbo: SAE 0W-20. Lambda 3.8 V6 (Telluride): SAE 5W-20 or 5W-30. CRDi diesel engines: SAE 5W-30 with ACEA C3. Always verify in your owner's manual, as specifications can vary by model year.
Kia's 7-Year Warranty — Oil Compliance
Kia offers a 7-year / 100,000-mile warranty — the longest in the mainstream market. However, this warranty requires documented proof of correct oil usage at every service interval. Using non-API SP oil or extending intervals beyond Kia's recommendation can void your coverage. Keep all service receipts and oil purchase records.
CRDi Diesel — DPF-Safe Oil Required
Kia's CRDi diesel engines (1.6 CRDi, 2.0 CRDi) require low-SAPS oil meeting ACEA C3 specifications to protect the diesel particulate filter. High-SAPS oils produce metallic ash that accumulates permanently in the DPF — unlike soot, this ash cannot be burned off during regeneration. Always look for 'ACEA C3' on the bottle for any Kia diesel.
