Fiat uses its own 9.55535 specification system that defines precise oil requirements for petrol and diesel engines. The correct specification is particularly important for MultiAir variable valve timing engines and turbocharged TwinAir units where oil quality directly affects hydraulic valve control.
9.55535-GS1 — Modern Petrol Engines (0W-20 / 0W-30)
Fiat 9.55535-GS1 is the current specification for newer petrol engines, including the FireFly 1.0 and 1.3 found in the Tipo and 500. It requires low-viscosity SAE 0W-20 or 0W-30 with low-SAPS chemistry based on ACEA C5. This specification prioritises fuel economy while maintaining protection for turbo bearings and direct injection components. It is not backwards compatible with older FIRE engines.
9.55535-DS1 — Diesel with DPF (5W-30)
Fiat 9.55535-DS1 covers all Fiat diesel engines with diesel particulate filters, primarily the 1.3 MultiJet (currently the most popular diesel in Europe) and 1.6 MultiJet / 2.0 MultiJet. It requires SAE 5W-30 with low-SAPS content based on ACEA C2. The low sulphated ash content protects the DPF from premature blockage — using a non-DS1 oil will accelerate DPF soot loading.
9.55535-S3 — Older Petrol & NA Engines
Fiat 9.55535-S3 is the specification for older naturally aspirated petrol engines, including the legendary FIRE (Fully Integrated Robotised Engine) family. It accepts SAE 5W-40 and 10W-40 based on ACEA A3/B4 chemistry. This covers the 1.2 FIRE and 1.4 FIRE found in the Punto, Panda, and 500 (pre-facelift). These engines are mechanically simple and tolerant, but still benefit from quality oil to prevent sludge build-up.
MultiAir — Oil-Hydraulic Valve Control
Fiat's MultiAir technology uses pressurised engine oil to actuate the intake valves via an electro-hydraulic system, replacing the traditional camshaft-to-valve mechanical link. This means the engine oil must maintain precise viscosity and cleanliness to ensure accurate valve timing. Degraded or wrong-spec oil causes sluggish MultiAir response, rough idling, and loss of power. The 1.4 MultiAir in the Fiat 500 and Alfa Romeo Giulietta is especially sensitive to oil quality.
Selenia — Fiat's Official Oil Brand
Petronas Selenia is the factory-fill oil partner for Fiat. Selenia K Pure Energy 5W-40 (9.55535-S3) and Selenia WR Forward 0W-20 (9.55535-GS1) are the key products. As with all manufacturers, the Fiat specification number on the bottle is what matters — any oil carrying the correct 9.55535 approval is a valid choice.
