Subaru Engine Oil Specifications & Guides

3 models covered — find the right oil specification for your Subaru.

Subaru's horizontally-opposed Boxer engines have a unique flat layout that affects oil distribution and drainage differently from inline or V engines. All modern Subarus require API SP oil in SAE 0W-20, and the permanent symmetrical AWD system means the engine always drives all four wheels.

API SP 0W-20 — The Subaru Standard

All current Subaru Boxer engines require SAE 0W-20 meeting API SP (or the older SN Plus). This covers the FB20 2.0L (Impreza, XV/Crosstrek), FB25 2.5L (Outback, Forester), and FA24 2.4L turbo (WRX, Outback XT). Subaru does not have a proprietary OEM oil specification — API SP with the correct viscosity is the requirement. In markets where API SP oils are less common, ACEA A1/B1 or C5 in 0W-20 is an acceptable alternative.

Boxer Engine — Horizontal Cylinder Oil Behaviour

Subaru's Boxer engine mounts its cylinders horizontally, meaning gravity pulls oil sideways across the pistons rather than down the cylinder walls as in a conventional engine. This affects oil drainage from the combustion chamber and can contribute to the oil consumption issues that some Subaru engines experience. The FB-series engines, particularly early FB20 and FB25 units, were subject to an oil consumption class action in the US. Using the correct 0W-20 viscosity helps maintain proper oil film on the horizontal cylinder walls.

Symmetrical AWD — Engine Load Considerations

Every Subaru (except the BRZ) features permanent symmetrical all-wheel drive, meaning the engine always drives all four wheels through a centre differential. This creates a constant baseline parasitic load that is higher than a front-wheel-drive equivalent. The AWD system itself uses separate gear oil, but the engine's higher average load means it generates more heat and works the oil harder. This is one reason Subaru specifies the fuel-efficient 0W-20 — to offset the efficiency penalty of permanent AWD.

WRX & BRZ — Performance Applications

The WRX with the FA24 2.4L turbo Boxer requires the same SAE 0W-20 API SP as other Subarus. The BRZ, which shares its FA24 naturally aspirated engine with the Toyota GR 86, also uses 0W-20. Despite being performance vehicles, Subaru does not specify a different viscosity or higher-grade oil. However, track use creates oil temperatures beyond what normal driving produces — owners who regularly track these cars should monitor oil temperature and consider shorter change intervals.

Subaru Oil Change Intervals

Subaru recommends oil changes every 6,000 miles or 6 months for normal conditions, and every 3,000 miles for severe conditions (which includes frequent short trips, dusty environments, and towing). These are among the shortest manufacturer-recommended intervals in the industry, reflecting the demands of the Boxer engine layout and permanent AWD. Subaru does not use a variable oil life monitor — intervals are fixed by mileage and time.
