Land Rover shares the STJLR.03.5007 oil specification with Jaguar for its Ingenium engine family. Given that Land Rovers regularly face off-road conditions, wading, and heavy towing, oil quality and change intervals are critical for protecting these engines in extreme environments.
STJLR.03.5007 — The JLR Standard
STJLR.03.5007 is the current specification for all Land Rover Ingenium petrol and diesel engines. It requires SAE 5W-20 with low-SAPS chemistry optimised for the tight clearances and DPF compatibility of Ingenium powertrains. This covers the 2.0 Ingenium petrol and diesel in the Evoque, Discovery Sport, and Defender, as well as the 3.0 Ingenium inline-six in the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport.
Off-Road & Wading — Oil System Stress
Land Rovers are designed for serious off-road use, including water wading up to 900mm in the Defender. Wading and off-road driving create unique oil system challenges: extreme angles can momentarily starve the oil pickup, water ingress through breathers can contaminate the oil, and low-speed high-load crawling generates extreme heat without cooling airflow. After any deep wading event, Land Rover recommends checking the oil for water contamination — milky or emulsified oil must be changed immediately.
Ingenium Diesel — Timing Chain and DPF
The 2.0 Ingenium diesel shares the same timing chain wear concerns as the Jaguar variant. Land Rover applications may experience even higher loads due to vehicle weight and off-road use. STJLR.03.5007 oil contains anti-wear additives specifically targeted at the timing chain system while maintaining low enough SAPS to protect the diesel particulate filter. Using an ACEA C3 oil instead of the correct JLR specification risks either inadequate chain protection or excessive DPF ash loading.
V8 Models — BMW and AJ Origins
Older Land Rovers — Discovery 3/4 and Range Rover Sport with the 4.4 TDV8 (Ford/Peugeot-derived) or 5.0 V8 (AJ-V8) — use earlier specifications. The 4.4 TDV8 requires ACEA C3 5W-30, while the 5.0 V8 supercharged uses ACEA A3/B4 5W-30. The latest Range Rover with the BMW-sourced 4.4 Twin-Turbo V8 (S68) uses BMW Longlife-17 FE+ specification. Always verify which engine is fitted before selecting oil.
Towing & Heavy Loads
Land Rovers are commonly used for towing horse boxes, caravans, and trailers — the Discovery can tow up to 3,500 kg. This places enormous thermal stress on the engine oil. For regular towing, Land Rover recommends shortened service intervals and monitoring oil condition between changes. The oil change interval should never exceed 12 months or 16,000 miles even under normal conditions, and should be halved for frequent towing or off-road use.
