Best Engine Oil for BMW 320d E46 (150 HP)

The BMW 320d E46 (2001-2005 facelift) was the car that made diesel BMWs desirable in the UK. The M47TUD20 produces 150 HP and 330 Nm from a 1,995cc four-cylinder common-rail turbodiesel — delivering the kind of effortless torque and motorway refinement that established BMW as the benchmark for driver-focused diesel saloons. Now 20+ years old, the E46 320d remains a popular enthusiast car that rewards correct maintenance with exceptional driving dynamics.

For BMW 320d E46 (150 HP):

  • Recommended viscosity: SAE 5W-30 (alternative: 5W-40 for pre-DPF models)
  • Oil capacity: 5.5 litres with filter (5.0 L without)
  • Required norms: ACEA C3, BMW Longlife-04

Note: Early E46 320d models (pre-2003, M47D20) did not have a DPF and could use BMW LL-01 (A3/B4 class). The 2003+ M47TUD20 with DPF requires LL-04 (C3 class). Check your model year.

The M47TUD20: BMW’s Diesel Pioneer

The M47 was BMW’s first mass-market four-cylinder diesel, developed in partnership with Rover Group (which explains why the same engine appeared in the Rover 75 CDT). The M47TUD20 (2003+) is the revised version with higher injection pressure, a revised turbo, and 150 HP output.

Swirl flaps are the M47’s most infamous problem. Small butterfly valves inside the intake manifold improve low-RPM airflow mixing, but the metal screws holding the flap vanes can fatigue and snap. If a screw or flap fragment is ingested into the engine, it causes catastrophic damage — scoring the cylinder walls, bending valves, and potentially destroying the engine. Many specialists recommend removing the swirl flaps entirely as preventive maintenance (£150-300 at a specialist).

Timing chain is rear-mounted on the M47 — unlike the front-mounted chain on the newer B47. Rear-mounted chain replacement requires gearbox removal, making it a £1,500-2,500 job. Chain stretch produces rattling on cold start. Quality oil extends chain tensioner life.

Turbo failures at higher mileages (120,000+ miles) are documented. Oil starvation from degraded oil is the primary cause. Allow idle time before shutdown after motorway driving.

Oil Change Intervals

Recommended for high-mileage E46: 7,500-10,000 miles or 12 months. The rear timing chain and turbo bearings both benefit from fresh oil.

Conclusion

The BMW 320d E46 requires BMW LL-04 in 5W-30, with 5.5 litres capacity. Address swirl flaps before they destroy the engine, monitor timing chain health, and allow turbo cool-down. A brilliant driver’s diesel that rewards attentive maintenance.
