Redex Petrol System Cleaner Review: The Honest Truth About the UK’s Most Popular Fuel Additive
Redex is the background hum of the British petrol station accessories shelf. Red bottles, simple marketing, and a price point that makes it an impulse buy at £3–6. It’s been around since the 1930s and has gone through multiple reformulations since then. The current petrol products — Petrol System Cleaner and the Advanced Petrol variant — are legitimate detergent-based fuel system cleaners. Whether they help your specific car depends entirely on what type of engine you have.
What Redex Petrol System Cleaner Contains
The active ingredient in Redex Petrol System Cleaner is PIBA — polyisobutylene amine, a synthetic polymer detergent used across the fuel additive industry. PIBA is also the active in BG 44K, Liqui-Moly Fuel System Cleaner, and most other petrol cleaning products, though at different concentrations and with different carrier packages.
PIBA works as a detergent-dispersant: it attaches to carbon and varnish deposits on metal surfaces, breaks them loose, and carries them in suspension through the fuel system where they’re burned in the combustion chamber. The GDI Problem: Most Modern Petrol Cars Are the Wrong Target

Its limitation is structural: most petrol cars sold in the UK since 2015 have GDI or mixed direct/port injection, and Redex cannot address the intake valve carbon that is the dominant maintenance issue in these engines. The marketing doesn’t tell you this, which leads to many buyers wondering why it “didn’t work” on their Golf TSI or Focus EcoBoost.
