Cataclean Review: Does It Actually Work Before Your MOT?
Cataclean is the UK’s best-selling fuel system and catalytic converter cleaner, and it occupies a peculiar place in the automotive additive market: it’s both more legitimate than most additives and more misunderstood than almost any of them. If you’re searching for it, you’re probably either preparing for an MOT or trying to clear a warning light. What Cataclean Is
Cataclean is a concentrated fuel system cleaner made by Cataclean Global Ltd, a UK company based in Bradford. Unlike many additives with vague “improves performance” claims, Cataclean has a specific, documented mechanism and a body of independent test data behind it.
The active chemistry is a blend of oxygenated hydrocarbon solvents — primarily 2-butoxyethanol and related compounds — that do two things when burned in your engine:

## Does Cataclean Work? The Evidence
For cleaning fuel system deposits: yes, and the evidence is consistent. Cataclean has been tested independently by Auto Express, Which?, and several garages who have published emission readings before and after use. The results across multiple test vehicles show:
- HC (hydrocarbons) typically reduced by 30–60% from a running engine
- CO (carbon monoxide) reduced by 15–40%
- Lambda value (the air/fuel ratio measure) moves closer to the ideal 1.0
The variance is large because the starting condition of the engine matters enormously. A well-maintained car running correctly will show modest improvement. A car with significant carbon buildup, a slightly lazy lambda sensor, or deposits in the EGR circuit will show dramatic improvement.

How to Use Cataclean Correctly
The most common mistake is adding it to a full tank. The instructions are specific for a reason:
- Fuel level: Let your tank drop to approximately 15–20 litres (roughly a quarter tank). This maximises the concentration in the fuel mixture.
- Add the bottle: Pour the full 450ml bottle into the fuel tank before adding any fuel.
- Drive: Run the tank down completely on a motorway or A-road at 60–70 mph. The catalyst needs to reach full operating temperature (~400–600°C) and stay there long enough for the cleaning solvents to work through the entire exhaust system.
- Time it before your MOT: Use it 1–2 weeks before the test, not the morning of. The cleaning process needs several heat cycles to complete, and you want the deposits fully burnt off before the emissions check.
For the petrol version, a full tank’s drive (roughly 15–20 litres burned) is sufficient. The diesel version needs at least one DPF active regeneration cycle to complete during the drive — this typically happens automatically on a 30+ minute motorway drive at 60+ mph.

Cataclean vs BG 44K
BG 44K is the professional fuel system cleaner used by garages and dealerships — more concentrated, more expensive (~£25–35), and stronger on injector deposits specifically. Cataclean is formulated differently, targeting the exhaust system and cat as much as the intake.
For strict MOT emission reduction, Cataclean is the more targeted product. For general injector and fuel system maintenance, BG 44K is stronger. They address different primary problems, though there’s significant overlap.
If you’re specifically prepping for emissions at MOT, use Cataclean. If you’re noticing rough idle, hesitation, or fuel economy drop from dirty injectors, use BG 44K.
Common Questions
Can you use Cataclean every tank? No — it’s not a regular additive. Use it every 3–6 months maximum, or once a year as routine maintenance. Overuse doesn’t improve results and is wasteful.
Does it work on modern GDI engines? Yes, but only for the exhaust-side deposits (combustion chamber, cat). GDI engines don’t benefit from any fuel additive for intake valve carbon buildup (since fuel never contacts the valves in direct injection). For GDI intake carbon, walnut blasting or Liqui-Moly Intake Cleaner spray via the air intake are the only solutions.
Can it damage anything? No documented cases of Cataclean damaging seals, injectors, or fuel system components at normal use. The solvents are compatible with all rubber fuel system materials in cars post-2000.
Will it pass an otherwise failing MOT? It can push borderline failing readings under the limit. It won’t pass a car with major mechanical failures. It’s not a cheat — it’s a cleaner, and what it cleans is real.

Use it if: You have a due MOT and borderline HC/CO readings, or your car’s performance has softened and you know the fuel system is dirty, or as once-a-year preventive maintenance.
Don’t use it if: The check engine light is on from a confirmed mechanical fault, or you’re hoping to pass an MOT you know your car shouldn’t pass — that’s not what this does.
